Artist Statement

“And what shall I love if not the enigma?”  Giorgio de Chirico’s question, posed in 1911, alludes to man’s aspirations to answer the elusive riddles of nature.  I strive to unravel these same mysteries in my artistic expression. My work centers on depicting the mind through visual metaphor. These paintings become diagrammatic depictions of the unseen processes of the mind. I visualize and document the mind using memory, thought process, and communication as motifs. These elements are placed into a psychological wilderness, full of vast open spaces representing the mysterious world of the human consciousness. By merging the natural world with two dimensional diagrammatic elements my paintings become paradoxical diagrams that are visual explanations for the unexplainable. Deviating from familiar everyday reality, I transport the viewer to a world without Euclidean geometry and horizons, to the world of thoughts and dreams.

I have always hungered for knowledge; my appetite for learning is insatiable. A strong interest and understanding of natural science, art history, philosophy and literature are paramount in enriching my artistic forms and expanding my mental horizons. Like Joseph Beuys and Buckminster Fuller, I believe as an artist it is my responsibility to introduce and encourage notions of a better world.I am inspired by the work of Roberto Matta, Julie Mehretu, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Edward Degas, William Kentridge, Mathew Barney, and Francis Bacon.

My aspirations as an artist are exemplified by this Yves Klein passage, “The painter must paint a single masterpiece: himself, unceasingly.”

“Jon is an extremely talented artist. We have worked on only few projects so far, but I can tell you he has been able to make great work of many of our corporate logo, marketing and branding efforts. He is easy to work with and his creativity is edgy and fresh.”
- Anthony Capece, Executive Director, Central District Management Association, Inc.

"Jon Beer is a young talented artist for whom I have had a pleasure of working with. I gave him pictures and ideas of what I was looking for and he immediately got started on the sketches. He updated me on a regular bases on the work he completed and incorporated my feed back to him. I am fully satisfied with his work and professionalism. He will be one of the artists of our time.
If you are searching for pure raw talent, look no further."
- Kalpesh Parekh

"Jonathan was able to take my vision and transform it into a reality above and beyond what I conceived for my vision. He worked step by step through the whole process."
